Treatment for Acid Reflux
Acid reflux, also called gastro-esophageal reflux disease or GERD, is a disorder where stomach acid and foods that have been eaten go back out of the stomach into the esophagus or throat, because the sphincter at the bottom of the esophagus is not working properly. It may open at unexpected times or be too weak to close all the way. This is very uncomfortable or even painful as the stomach acids can cause burning to the throat and other soft tissues. If you do not get the proper acid reflux treatment it can lead to permanent damage and more serious problems.
Acid reflux treatment will be different for each person, depending on the severity of the symptoms and any other health conditions each person may have. For some people, changes in lifestyle will be all that is needed to cure the symptoms. Avoiding foods that cause your symptoms to get worse is a good first step. There are many foods that are commonly known as acid reflux triggers, such as spicy foods, fatty foods, or citrus fruits. But it is different for everyone, and you don’t want to cut out foods that are nutritious if you don’t have to, so try to determine which foods are troublesome in your own case.
It’s a good idea to cut down on smoking, as well as drinking alcohol and coffee, as part of your acid reflux treatment. If you’re overweight, losing some of your extra pounds will also help relieve pressure on your stomach and help with acid reflux. You can also get some relief by avoiding lying down just after eating, and by elevating the head of your bed while you sleep so that you’re not lying flat. This lets gravity help to keep the stomach acids in the stomach.
More Serious Acid Reflux Treatments
If these steps do not help, see your doctor, who will suggest a medication you might try for acid reflux treatment. If your acid reflux is not very advanced, a regular antacid might be enough. In other cases, your doctor may recommend a prescription medicine, many of which must be taken every day whether experiencing symptoms or not. Be sure to check with your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medications which may react with the acid reflux treatment.
In drastic cases, surgery may be an option. There are methods which are not very invasive that have good results, but it’s still a last resort.
With all the acid reflux treatments available, you will no doubt find one that works for you.
